We all know about the bubble that is cupcakes hovering over the US right now, but more so all of the South Floridians know about the sweetness that has recently hit Dade-County. It’s a jungle out there! Misha’s Cupcakes has definitely set the bar for cupcakes, starting her growing business, or cult, from home as well. Butter Cream Bakery sounds like a wonderful, sweet (no pun intended) family oriented business of a hard working South Floria couple. The list can literally go on and on here.
It’s been a pretty long road for me and my family these past six months. Definitely a lot of sleepless nights, research, taste testing, exercising to compensate for taste testing, teaching myself the art of baking and decorating for that matter, everything that goes into following a passion and starting up a business on your own - all while chasing a very energetic toddler and upholding my job as being a Mom first. I chose to bake in the wee hours of the morning so that when my son was awake I could focus on him 100% of the time and enjoy every second I could with him.
I don’t want to demean the business or hard work I’ve put into it but it’s definitely not about the money for me. I love the organization Chocolate for Charity and have even thought about changing the name “Cushy Cakes” or creating a “Cupcakes for Charity” and donating all proceeds to a different charity each month. (I actually really have that detailed and drawn up to a T so if anyone wants to partner up please contact me!)
Originally I donated about 400 cupcakes to a Halloween Party my old condo was having for all of the kids in the buildings. Then I donated 350 cupcakes to Sunny Isles Beach Elementary for a PTSA fundraiser they held. In May I pulled another all-nighter and made over 500 cupcakes for The Great American Bake Sale at Aventura Mall. Making 500 cupcakes the night before the event so they’re as fresh as possible, by yourself, on your birthday (yes, I’m throwing that in there!), is a feat in itself - not to mention I went and set up tore down and participated in the bake sale sans sleep and with a whole lot of concealer and highlighter. We’ve participated in a ton of networking events all to try and learn from some of South Florida’s brilliant women and other business owners. Most of their jaws dropped when they learned I was 26 years old with a 1 and a half year old at home. Oh and, we don’t have a Nanny or help from family (no Abuela’s living with us over here!) and have had a baby sitter all of about 4 times since our son Ethan was born. People who knew me “back in they day” probably thought I was some volunteer freak or was doing it to add another line on my resume, but this is the stuff that really make me tick and keeps me feeling alive. Between cupcakes for charity, hunger, earthquakes, children, and education as “Bklyn2Miami” put it, we won’t be making over $250K this year!
I am very proud of all of the hard work I’ve put into Cushy Cakes and aside from a fake Facebook account that is spamming me and threatening me, both on my personal account and Cushy Cakes Facebook page, and an email that I received from that same person (thank goodness for IP addresses and Police reports!) I’ve been feeling pretty good about the mission of the business and what it’s yielded for the community.
Recently I was interviewed by a reporter from The Miami Herald who was writing an article about how Cushy Cakes’ was born and what happenings inspired me to start the business. I see that some local home bakers are not too happy about this recently publicity and I definitely understand that feeling, but hate mail is just not the most positive way to go about it. Do research, get licensed, and get moving! Cushy Cakes is a up and running IRS paying legitimate business here in Aventura where I’m sure all codes and rules apply. One of the companies an individual can register with to become a certified food handler is ServSafe. We do have a Food Manager Certification as required by the state and the certificate number is 7222725.
Hopefully this post will help clear anything, or anyone, that might be attempting to pop the cupcake bubble that’s hovering over us here in South Florida. Cheer up folks. Life isn’t always Cushy but you can surely make it as sweet as you’d like it!
